Scenario: Steampunk is a trend. The term itself comes from science fiction novels. But over the years it’s grown into a whole visual style, and even a philosophy.

It’s all about mixing old and new. Your task is to create a new artifact, it needs to be fully functional but with the added twist of steampunk style Steampunk is Victorian science fiction. Steampunk has existed since the nineteenth century. Gears are a recognized symbol for steampunk, steampunk is a taking an object and making it into a steampunk theme. Google’s are often uncounted as steampunk. Steampunk uses this existing technology and structure to imagine an even more advanced 19th century, often complete with Victorian-inspired wonders like steam-powered aircraft and mechanical computers.

Item 1: my first item i have chosen is a box controller i have design edit into a steampunk design as much as possible. I have made a modern Xbox controller into the steampunk theme.

item 2: my second design is also a Xbox controller because i was trying out different steampunk designs on a Xbox controller. I have added two gears as the analog sticks and added a cog around the dashboard button.

item 3: my 3rd design is a memory stick it has a stem punk design on the the memory stick i have then made the key ring bit of the memory stick into a cog to make it fit the steampunk them.

chosen idea Xbox controller: I have chosen this Xbox controller as my chosen design because i think it is a detailed design and it fits the steampunk theme the most because of the detail on the controller. I have also chosen the Xbox controller as my chosen design because it is the thing that i am most interested in. The Xbox controller could be improved by adding more steampunk images and adding more detail onto the controller but overall i think that it is a good design for a Xbox controller.

The history of steampunk The term Steampunk was first coined in 1987 by K. W. Jeter, the author of the novel Morlock Night. He used the term to describe a genre of speculative fiction in which steam, not electricity, drove technological advancements. Since then it has been used to describe an artistic and cultural movement. Authors such as Tim Powers, James Blaylock, William Gibson, and Bruce Sterling have have created worlds inspired by the Victorian era, giving rise to the modern conception of “steampunk”. These authors were heavily influenced by nineteenth century writers H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, who are often considered the forefathers of steampunk. Where did steampunk come from? In some sense, steampunk has existed since the 19th century. The Victorian period had its own science fiction, perhaps most famously embodied by the works of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells, and throughout the 20th century there have been later-day science fiction stories set in the Victorian period. However, the term “steampunk” was not coined until the late 1980s, when author K. W. Jeter used it humorously to describe a grouping of stories set in the Victorian period written during a time when near-future cyberpunk was the prevailing form of science fiction. What about gears? The gear is an easily recognized symbol of steampunk, but it is not unique to the genre. It was invented long before the 19th century and it remains in use today. The gear in steampunk joins related devices such as flywheels and pistons as the “power lines” of the steam age. Steam power is mechanical power and its transmission demands a network of moving parts in the same way that electrical power transmission demands wires.

The gear on its own is not especially “steampunk” but when put to use in 19th century machinery it becomes a key icon of the genre. What is the appeal of steampunk? A genre as large as steampunk has a wide-ranging appeal. Some people are drawn to it from a love of the Victorian period. Others enjoy steampunk unique approach to technology: re-imagining modern capabilities with 19th century machines. Many people are drawn to it in light of its fashion aspects, which allow them to sample and even combine a range of clothing styles and accessories from across the 19th century world. One critical aspect of steampunk is the tremendous diversity of appeal it presents, which allows it to offer something for just about everyone. Steampunk is also aided by a more general neo-vintage movement, which has been steadily progressing through mainstream fashion, film and aesthetics, but even this cannot wholly explain steampunk appeal. The genre possesses a life of its own that draws in fans from countless directions and backgrounds into a world where fashion is tailored to the individual, goods are made to last, and machinery is still regarded as a thing of visual majesty. Where does the steam come in? Steampunk steam references more than simply the technology itself, although steam engines are a vital aspect of life in a steampunk world. Steam more generally signifies a world in which steam technology is both dominant and prolific. During the Victorian era, steam power revolutionized almost every aspect of life. The steam engine made full-scale industrialization possible and produced mechanical power more efficiently and to greater degrees than human and animal labor could manage on their own. Mechanized manufacturing and farming caused an upheaval in the structure of working life, but they dramatically increased society’s productivity and freed up an entire section of society to form the modern class of professionals and office workers. The changes in society brought on by steam-driven industrialization allowed for the unprecedented developments in sciences, society and goods that came to be associated with the Victorian era. Steampunk takes inspiration from these changes and applies them to whatever culture it influences. Where does the punk come in? Ironically, it doesn’t. As was mentioned earlier, the term “steampunk” is a tongue in cheek reference to the cyberpunk genre rather than a reference to the punk subculture. Moreover, “punk” in the context of punk rock was the product of very specific circumstances following the Second World War, which makes it fundamentally distinct from the Victorian aesthetic that inspires steampunk. However, individuals interested in exploring a steampunk equivalent to 20th century punk can find a wealth of material in 19th century counterculture groups ranging from the Luddites to Utopians to hooligans. Add a dash of Victorian street culture and a sprinkling of ragtime, and steampunk “punk”

This is my chosen design when I come to making it , it is good because it is steampunk design but could be improved by adding more detail onto the controller to make it more into a steampunk design.when i come to make the controller i am going to adjust the controller slightly to add more detail onto the controller.

These are ideas of different styles of cogs and gears they are my initial ideas whilst i was deciding what ones i wanted to design onto my controller. This was my first sketched design it is a basic design of a Xbox 360 controller so that i got used to designing Xbox 360 basic design.

i have developed the design by adding cogs and gears onto it above. when i come to making the steampunk Xbox 360 controller i will start with a basic controller like this i then will add cogs and gears to it and spray paint the controller to make it into a steampunk themed controller. when i come to making the Xbox 360 controller i will add more detail to it to make it into a more steampunk controller.

my Xbox controller will be spray-painted a bronze/brown color to fit the steampunk theme.

I started of with a basic white Xbox 360 controller.

I then spray painted the controller brown and dry brushed the controller to make it into a more steampunk theme and to make it more steampunk.I spray painted my controller 3 times to make sure that it look ok. After i had spray painted the controller brown i then took the battery pack off and spray painted it gold and the other half of the battery pack brown. dry brushing the controller makes the controller look more old and makes the controller stand out more. I then dry brushed the back of the controller silver and then done the same to the front. I then added cogs on the A,X,Y,B button(stuck them on with the glue gun) I also dry brushed the d-pad so that it is in amore steampunk theme and so that it stands out more. I then added two gold cogs onto the analog sticks, i spray painted the cogs gold and added them to the analog sticks. I spray painted the controller brown to make it fit to the steampunk theme. Then I added cogs which I got of eBay.

I stuck them onto I then dry brushed the top of the controller to make it stand out more and to make it more into the steampunk theme and repeated this process many times. dry brushing is when you get some paint and brush most of the paint off and just leave a little on the paint brush and brush the edges of the controller to make it go onto the edges only and not the base of the controller. I then spray painted the battery pack half brown and half gold and repeated this many times to make sure that the finish of the battery pack was good. I also dry brushed the back of the controller silver at the back and at the front of the controller. finished controller overall I think that my controller turned out how i wanted it to and it turned out well.
